It is a busy week for Usha, Hepsiba, Sneha, Silambarasan and Ashok. They have to do some elaborate shopping as well as take part in rigorous training. These five youngsters from Chennai will represent India at the upcoming ‘Street Child Games 2016’ scheduled to take place at Rio de Janerio, Brazil, from March 14 to 20.

An initiative of NGO Street Child United (SCU), it uses sports to challenge the negative perceptions about street children.

These young people have been rescued and trained by Karunalaya Social Service Society, Centre for Street and Working Children, which is the official Indian partner of SCU.

“In 2014, we took a team for the Street Children World Cup at Brazil. Of the five children going this time, four will be competing in athletics and the other one in the International Street Child Congress,” said N. Paul Sunder Singh, secretary, Karunalaya.

He says these children have become leaders in their own ways; they help the police rescue children in distress. Fourteen countries are taking part in the Games.

Karunalaya is located at Tondiarpet. For details, call 9444138348
